Elders Wu Jiannan and Hao Ming of Sichuan’s Chrisitain Qiuyu Qingcaodi Church receive prison sentences
Following a persecution that began in 2018, Elders Wu Jiannan and Hao Ming received a three-year jail sentence with a five-year suspension.
On April 9, 2024, the Jingyang District Court in Deyang City, Sichuan, issued its ruling on the case involving Elders Hao Ming and Wu Jiannan of Sichuan’s Qiuyu Qingcaodi Church. Both elders were sentenced to three years in prison, suspended for five years, and fined 30,000 yuan. Additionally, Elder Wu was instructed to reimburse the 100,130 yuan provided to his family by the church.
The magazine “Bitter Winter” has closely followed the story of Sichuan’s Qiuyu Qingcaodi Church since its inception. On December 10, 2018, the church, also known as the Early Rain Green Pasture Church, in Deyang city, Sichuan province, was subjected to a raid. Officials from the Public Security Bureau and Religious Affairs Bureau alleged that the church had established a private meeting place in violation of the law. They demanded believers vacate the premises, prohibited religious activities, and posted a closure notice.
Two days later, on December 12, the authorities raided the church again. Nine police officers stormed the meeting venue, dispersing believers gathered there. Under pressure from the police, the landlord sealed the church on December 13. Despite the closure, the congregation continued Sunday worship in a park near Deyang’s Jinghu Lake, monitored by local officials who documented the gatherings. Elder Hao Ming was summoned for questioning.
The true motive behind the raids emerged: Elders Hao Ming and Wu Jiannan had publicly protested the persecution of the Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu and signed an appeal in its support. Their refusal to retract their signatures led to their detention in November 2021, along with other colleagues, culminating in their formal arrest.
